When I was a child, my brother and I would walk home from school together. One day, we came across a baby bunny on the fire road we walked on, and he gently picked it up and moved it out of harm’s way. The bunny in my memory wasn’t white – it was a soft, natural brown. I chose to paint this bunny white as a way to symbolize the purity and innocence of childhood. The purity and innocence of gently clutching a baby creature with the exclusive kindness of naïve children. How I wished my brother would’ve treated me with the same gentleness. The upper half of the painting is covered by honeycomb, the lower half with an ocean of pure, shining honey. The honeycomb represents memory and its never-ending cycle of growth and overgrowth. Five bees populate the canvas – sculpted from modeling paste to give a 3D element to the piece. I also used modeling paste to create the soft, fuzzy texture of the rabbit’s fur. This piece holds an extremely deep and personal place in my heart. Our tender childhoods are rife with opportunities for creation and expression, especially our most poignant memories.
